Metronomes

Although a sequencer can be treated as nothing more than a multitrack MIDI recorder, its real power lies in the way in which it can modify or edit recorded data. When a recording is made, the sequencer is set to the tempo of the desired recording and a metronome click is laid down so that the musical performance can be synchronised with the internal tempo of the sequencer. In this way the MIDI data is arranged in musically meaningful bars, which makes editing note timing or copying and moving whole sections a very easy and precise procedure.

With music incorporating tempo changes it’s possible to enter a new tempo at any bar or beat location, although some budget sequencers may impose a limit on the number of tempo changes which can be placed in each song. More sophisticated sequencers may even have a graphic Tempo Editing mode, in which smooth increases or decreases in tempo can be created by drawing slopes.

If you don’t want to be tied to a tempo at all, you can simply turn off the metronome click and play normally.
